Crossing Continents: A Journey Toward Sustainability
Embarking on a journey without the comfort of air travel is a choice that few people would consider in today’s fast-paced world. Yet for Shota, this decision marks the beginning of an extraordinary adventure. The Ecological Odyssey is not just a story of crossing continents by train and bus, it is a deep dive into the heart of sustainable development, revealing the innovative practices of countries that are striving to protect our planet.
From wind trains in the Netherlands to solar parks in Germany, Shota’s journey highlights how collective efforts – by individuals, businesses and governments – can pave the way for a greener future. During this odyssey, he discovers not only the beauty of ecological innovations, but also the essential role we all play in preserving the earth.
Chapter 1: The Ecological Odyssey
The Netherlands – Departure from Rotterdam
Shota stood on the platform of Rotterdam Central Station, looking with a certain melancholy at the tracks stretching out before him. It was a moment of transition for him. After six months of internship at CGS, a company specializing in sustainable recruitment, he was about to return home to Japan, choosing an unconventional route: traveling only by train and bus.
The decision to travel without flying had not been easy. However, after working at CGS and absorbing their philosophy of sustainability, he couldn’t imagine returning any other way. Flights are among the most polluting forms of transportation, emitting vast amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. As a passionate environmental advocate, Shota wanted to prove that it was possible to travel across continents while limiting one’s ecological footprint.
The journey he had chosen began here, in the Netherlands, a country where he had learned to appreciate efforts to reduce carbon footprints through sustainable practices. The Netherlands is, indeed, a fascinating example of ecological transition. Although small in size, this country has implemented infrastructure focused on renewable energy and sustainability. With its many cycling paths, electric trains, and initiatives to reduce fossil fuel consumption, the Netherlands stands at the forefront of the fight against climate change.
During his six months in Rotterdam, Shota had often used the train to travel between different cities. He discovered that Dutch trains run 100% on wind energy, an achievement he particularly admired. “Moving with the power of the wind,” he often thought, while gazing at the majestic wind turbines lining the flat landscape of the country. “It’s proof that we can move forward while respecting the planet.“
This idea of ecological movement had deeply resonated with him, and it was what motivated this journey. Through this continental crossing, he wanted to discover how other countries cared for their environment, while highlighting the sustainable solutions they employed.
The bus from Rotterdam to Sarajevo awaited him. It would be the first leg of a long adventure. Shota boarded, travel journal in hand, ready to note every detail, every impression. As the bus left the city, he took one last look at the skyscrapers of Rotterdam, a modern city that had managed to balance economic growth with environmental respect. The journey was just beginning.
Chapter 2: The Ecological Odyssey
Germany – The Green Power of Europe
Shota stepped off the bus in Berlin, the first major city after crossing the border between the Netherlands and Germany. He knew that Germany was a European pioneer in sustainability. The country had invested heavily in renewable energy and set ambitious goals for reducing its CO2 emissions.
One of the first things Shota noticed in Germany was the omnipresence of solar panels and wind farms. Entire fields were dedicated to these imposing but fascinating structures. He quickly became interested in Germany’s energy transition, commonly referred to as “Energiewende.” This program aimed to reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels, particularly coal, and shift towards greener energy sources such as wind, solar, and biomass.
Shota recalled a conversation with a colleague at CGS, who had explained that Germany was not only an economic powerhouse but also a leader in the fight against climate change. The country had managed to lower its emissions while maintaining stable economic growth. It was proof that a green transition was possible without sacrificing prosperity.
As he took the train from Berlin to Munich, Shota watched the German countryside pass by. There was a striking contrast between agricultural fields and forests of wind turbines. He reflected on what this meant for future generations. The train he was riding was electric, powered in part by the same renewable energy sources he had seen along the way.
During his internship at CGS, he had learned how the recruitment sector could play a crucial role in this transition. CGS helped companies hire talent specializing in sustainability and renewable energy jobs. Positions such as solar energy engineers, recycling experts, or energy transition consultants were increasingly in demand. He realized how vital these jobs were in building a sustainable future, not just in Germany but worldwide.
Once in Munich, he wandered through the English Garden, a vast, green park in the heart of the city. As he breathed in the fresh air, Shota felt inspired. He had set a personal challenge to reduce his ecological footprint, but he now realized that this journey went far beyond himself. He was a participant, a messenger, in a global movement to protect the planet.
Before boarding his next train to Austria, he took a few minutes to jot down his thoughts in his journal:
“Germany is living proof that the ecological transition is possible. Through their investments in renewable energy and commitment to sustainability, they show that we can build a future where the economy and the environment can thrive together. This stage of my journey has shown me that we all have a responsibility, not only as individuals but also through businesses and governments. CGS is part of this revolution, and I’m proud to have contributed to it“.
