Gas Trader

We are looking for a talented and motivated Trader to strengthen our client’s trading team in Middelburg. The Team is responsible for the hedging of the Asset portfolio in the wholesale market through trading in standard energy contracts (via exchanges or OTC) within set risk limits. The trading horizon is maximum 3 to 5 years.

About the department

This position will be part of the Asset Optimisation & Trading team, reporting to Head of Asset Optimisation & Trading. Asset Optimisation & Trading manages the asset portfolio and trading trading books by optimising and hedging the market value of the asset portfolio within the trading horizon through optimal and approved lock-in strategies. To this end, it mainly trades gas, electricity, CO2 and Guarantees of Origin in the Northwest European energy market to optimise the market value of the flexible assets and mitigate market risks through hedging. In doing so, the trading desk is also responsible for hedging FX exposure.

Besides the P&L of the Asset Book and the trading books, the department is responsible for the contractual asset management and tolling of the assets and managing the asset joint ventures.  The trading team is responsible for the hedging of the asset portfolio in the wholesale market through trading in standard energy contracts (via exchanges or OTC) within set risk limits. Additionally, the team is expected to meet its prop trading targets using the same products. The trading horizon is DA up to 5 years.

Responsibilities

▪Manages multiple strategies or multiple commodities in the trading books. Is responsible for the Profit & Loss and VAR of these book items. Operates within (risk) guidelines
▪Manages the exposure to natural gas in the overall asset portfolio (CCGT/storage/interconnection/downstream)
▪Analyses market developments and movements (makes demand and supply movements in the market visible). Actively seeks market opportunities. Analyses risks and defines success factors
▪Contributes to the transparency of market data and movements. Ensures the availability and reporting of this data
▪Initiates or creates improvement opportunities and commercial marketing methods

Knowledge, experience and skills

▪Experienced trader with a proven track record
▪Thorough knowledge of relevant (international) markets, market movements and market data
▪Thorough knowledge of relevant economic and legal principles including relevant laws and regulations (e.g. REMIT, EMIR)
▪Affinity with quantitative trading models and strategies and techniques as applied in energy trading
▪Thorough knowledge of complex energy contracts (structured products) and financial products (derivatives) and in particular physical energy assets (power plants, gas storage etc.)
▪Solid knowledge of software applications used.

You have completed an financial or exact study (MSc, PhD) and you have work experience in a comparable position. Knowledge of energy markets and trade is an important advantage.
