Chapter 15: The Ecological Odyssey

Japan – Returning Home Under the Sign of Ecology

After crossing the vast expanse of Russia, Shota finally reached Vladivostok, the easternmost point of Russia. He realized that although his initial plan was to return directly to Japan, the ferry costs were far too high. He had to take a detour through Shanghai, China, before catching a flight to Tokyo, his only and unique destination.

When he finally set foot on Japanese soil, he was overwhelmed with emotion. Tokyo, his hometown, welcomed him with pouring rain, but this did not diminish his pride in having completed this long journey through so many countries and cultures.

The first thing he did was to go to Tokyo Station, where he took a photo in front of the imposing building, a satisfied smile on his face. He reflected on everything he had learned during this months-long journey.

Shota Testimony

“It isn’t easy to put into words what I felt during this journey, but I would say I experienced both enjoyment and tension. Each day, I had to make decisions about what I do and where I go, even encountering some dangerous situations along the way. This continuous tension was mentally exhausting. However, the views of each country changes day by day and it never gets me bored. One thing remains the same in every changing day: the kindness of people. Wherever I went, local people always helped and supported me. For example, the stranger who helped me when I  got food poisoning in Georgia, and the family who invited me into their home and treated me the traditional way in Kazakhstan. Besides them, there were so many people I appreciated. I can say that my journey was made by the kindness of people I encountered. Currently, after coming back to Japan, I feel like I’ve been pulled back to reality. I sometimes feel traveling to Eurasia was nothing but a dream. However, the connections with people and the views I saw vividly remain in my memory. The goal I got from my journey is to create a better world together with people from all over the world. This would be the same passion I felt from the members at CGS, who are strongly committed to a sustainable environment & future. I am currently looking for a job in Japan based on my career goal”.
