Sustainable Transition and Heritage in Eastern Europe: Serbia and Bulgaria’s Path to a Greener Future
Eastern Europe is at the heart of a sustainable transition heritage, where nations strive to balance their cultural legacy with modern environmental practices. Serbia and Bulgaria stand as prime examples of this delicate balance. They showcase efforts in renewable energy, nature preservation, and ecological awareness. Shota’s journey delves into how these nations are shaping their futures, and CGS plays a key role by connecting skilled professionals to innovative sustainability solutions.
Chapter7: The Ecological Odyssey
Serbia – Between Heritage and Modernity
Shota’s next stop was Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. Arriving in this vibrant city, he was quickly captivated by its striking contrast between the old and the new. Stark Soviet-era buildings stood alongside modern, trendy spaces, symbolizing a city in transition. What Shota quickly discovered was that Serbia was just beginning to address sustainability issues.
In conversations with locals, Shota learned that ecological transition was an emerging topic. Serbia, still largely dependent on coal-fired power plants, faced significant challenges in reducing its CO2 emissions. Local initiatives were emerging, especially in renewable energy. Solar and wind projects were under development.
Shota spent a day along the Danube River, vital to Serbia’s economy but heavily polluted. He reflected on how international companies, advised by CGS, can impact the environment. By investing in clean technologies, they can help accelerate ecological transitions.
In his notebook, Shota wrote:
“Belgrade is a city in full evolution, just like the rest of Serbia. The transition to a sustainable model will not happen overnight, but every small step counts. Eastern Europe, still marked by its industrial history, has a key role to play in the fight against climate change. CGS can contribute by helping to recruit talents who will bring innovative solutions to these challenges”.

Chapter 8: The Ecological Odyssey
Bulgaria – At the Crossroads of History and a Sustainable Future
After exploring Serbia, Shota continued his journey by taking a bus to Bulgaria. Arriving in Sofia, the capital, he was immediately charmed by the diverse cultural influences marking this historic city. Old Byzantine churches stood beside modern buildings, symbolizing Bulgaria’s transition towards a future more integrated with the European Union.
Upon arrival, Shota took an interest in Bulgaria’s ecological efforts. Though still reliant on nuclear energy, Bulgaria showed progress in renewable energy. Wind and solar parks were being developed. The country leveraged its abundant sunlight for rural solar projects and harnessed winds in the Rhodope Mountains.
Shota also visited the Pirin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The snow-capped mountains and dense forests made this place a haven of biodiversity. Expanding ski resorts threatened the region’s fragile ecosystem. This raised questions about the balance between economic growth and nature preservation.
Sitting at the top of a mountain pass, Shota reflected on the importance of raising public awareness on these issues:
“Bulgaria is at a crossroads. As it modernizes its infrastructure and increasingly aligns with European standards, it must ensure not to sacrifice its natural resources for short-term economic gains. CGS’s role is crucial here: we must help companies recruit experts capable of implementing sustainable solutions”.

He also thought about the relationship between energy and the environment. Like many Eastern European nations, Bulgaria aimed to reduce energy dependence and meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. This challenge reflected the difficulties many developing countries faced in achieving sustainability.
